Research

At Energy and Building Design we look at the whole building as a system. Starting with the whole building, the aim is to design sustainable and energy-efficient buildings with high thermal and visual comfort in coordination with the technical distribution systems of the buildings. The unique placement of the division at a University with educational programmes for engineers, architects and industrial designers provides a good base for the interdisciplinary expertise that is required to design technically and architecturally well-functioning and aesthetically pleasing solutions.
Within Energy and Building Design we focus on:
- Energy use and energy-efficiency
- Thermal and visual comfort
- Passive and active use of solar energy
- Passive cooling (window opening/solar protection)
- Glass in buildings
- The demands and requirements of the user
The research covers the whole area between theory and demonstration projects. Our projects are about:
- Development of calculation models
- Simulation and analysis
- Measurements of the performance of components, for example g-values of shading devices, efficiency of solar collectors
- Validation of calculation models by measurements
- Demonstration buildings; participation in design, erection and evaluation phases
- Development of design tools and informative books and brochures
